lecture on “Quantum Computers and Quantum Supremacy”

We are honored to announce that Dr. John Martinis, an American physicist famous for his work on quantum physics, will visit our campus as Academia Sinica Lecturer and deliver a lecture on “Quantum Computers and Quantum Supremacy” at the International Conference Hall (3F), Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB) at Academia Sinica on April 26, 2023.

John Martinis did pioneering experiments in superconducting qubits in the 1980’s. He has worked on a variety of low temperature device physics during his career, focusing on quantum computation since the late 1990’s. From 2014 to 2020 he worked at Google to build a useful quantum computer, culminating in a quantum supremacy experiment in 2019. With 53 qubits the Sycamore processor takes about 200 seconds to run a quantum circuit a million times – the equivalent task for a state-of-the-art classical supercomputer would take approximately 10,000 years.

Dr. Martinis is currently a professor of physics at the Department of Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara. He was awarded the London Prize in Low Temperature Physics in 2014, and the John Stewart Bell Prize in 2021. In this talk, he will explain the basic concepts behind the exponential power of this technology and how to build a quantum computer using superconductors.
